OPERATION “BLUEBIRD” – Back to School is Here!

If your child attends a Walton County School then Thursday, August 10th is a big day!  For some it is the first day ever; for others, a return to familiar surroundings.  Either way, our kids will be roaming the halls and preparing to learn.  The DeFuniak Springs Police Department wants students to arrive safely throughout this year.  That’s why we have joined with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office for Operation “Bluebird.”  Officers and Deputies will be stepping up patrols and enforcement in school zones throughout the City.  Marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles will be used to help ensure our kids arrive safely to school and their homes.  Additionally, signs reminding motorists of their speed and to drive slowly are being deployed.  “We want to do everything we can to ensure our kids have the safest travels to and from school,” said Chief Mark Weeks.  “We ask the public to follow a few simple tips as our future depends on ensuring their safety.”

  • Prepare to stop for school buses.  Buses may have new routes and bus stops for unloading and loading of students this year.  Be aware that motorists are required to stop on both sides of the highway for buses displaying flashing red lights unless the roadway is divided by at least a 5 foot, unpaved median.  In DeFuniak Springs, U.S. Highway 331 South is one of the few roadways that meets this exception and only for traffic on the opposite side of the road.

  • Drive slowly in and around schools.  Allow more time for dropping off and picking up kids.  Many roads have flashing lights designating a slower speed, but some do not.

  • Check your back seat when you arrive at your destination to make sure no children are left behind.

DeFuniak Springs Police believe your children’s safety is a top priority.  Please drive safely and buckle-up!
