DEFUNIAK SPRINGS POLICE JOIN COMMUNITY IN WELCOMING FALLEN HERO HOME

DeFuniak Springs Police were honored to be able to participate in welcoming home a fallen hero whose whereabouts were unknown for more than 70 years.  The remains of Lt. Ewart Theodore Sconiers were located in Poland after the perseverance of his family members and the assistance of the POW/MIA Accounting Agency Promise Keepers.  Many dignitaries, members of the military, public safety agencies and the community gathered on Friday morning to give reverent tribute to Lt. Sconiers.  A procession that included the Junior ROTC from Walton High School traveled down Baldwin Avenue before turning on Circle Drive, ending at Michigan and Plateau.  Words of adoration and appreciation were expressed by many along the way.  “Lt. Sconiers was a true American Hero who gave his life to defend our great nation.  We are glad he will finally rest in peace in the community he called home, said Chief Mark Weeks”  A funeral will take place Saturday morning at Southwide Baptist Church with burial to following in the cemetery located behind the church.
