[ARCHIVED] SUSPECT TRIES TO ESCAPE FROM POLICE THROUGH POST OFFICE

DeFuniak Springs Police conducted a traffic stop on Tuesday morning for failing to maintain a single lane on 18th Street near the U.S. Post Office. The driver of the vehicle began slowing down, while a male passenger, began crawling through passenger’s side window. The passenger who was also not wearing his seatbelt, began running towards the enclosed area behind Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative (CHELCO). The 31 year old suspect, Karl Eugene Lee Ruggirello, was pursued on foot by Officers. Ruggirello turned back and went towards the Post Office. He then climbed over a fence surrounding the secure area where mail is received. He refused to obey orders by Officers to stop and began pulling on the rear doors of the Post Office building. Additional Officers arrived and were able to take Ruggirello into custody without further incident. Ruggirello was transported to the Walton County Jail and charged with Passenger Not Wearing a Seat Belt, Resisting an Officer without Violence, and Loitering or Prowling. “Thankfully the Post Office was secured and no-one was hurt. This suspect may have only been charged with not having his seatbelt on if he had just complied with the Officer’s instructions in the beginning” said Chief Mark Weeks.
