On March 21st, 2011 the DeFuniak Springs Police gave a presentation on Driving Safely and Home Security to a local organization known as “Senior Circle” at McLain’s Family Steak House.
City Marshal, Chief Mark A. Weeks gave an introduction thanking the organization for the honor to come and educate them on the challenges that we all face on a day to day basis.
Lieutenant Mears started the presentation with Safety Tips and Warning Signs on driving and aging. “Driver Safety is an important and often sensitive issue for seniors, however driving safely longer by taking care of your health and incorporating safe driving practices is the key to your own safety” said Lieutenant Mears.
Tips and warnings on home safety for seniors including telemarketing frauds were next. Lieutenant Mears explained several ways how they could protect their homes and their selves from intruders. With audience participation, there was several examples given that were educational in recognizing warning signs and how to reduce the chances of being a target.
In closing Lieutenant Mears Stated “Remember, giving money to a fraudulent telemarketer usually means losing it forever, don’t let a criminal break into your home through your telephone line”.
