[ARCHIVED] CHIEF ESCORTS DISTINGUISHED DEFUNIAK SPRINGS WOMAN

The DeFuniak Springs Woman’s Club honored Mrs. Mildred Wilkerson at 10 AM on Friday, August 12th at the Chautuaqua Hall of Brotherhood. Mrs. Wilkerson was honored for her tremendous contributions to the community as an educator and school board member. Mrs. Wilkerson touched so many lives and molded young minds during her tenure as a 8th grade science teacher at Walton Middle School where she taught for 33 years. Upon retiring, Mrs. Wilkerson ran for and was elected as a school board member on the Walton County School Board. Mrs. Wilkerson has the distinction of being the first African American woman to be elected on the School Board. She served has Chairman of the School Board several times during her three terms of office. “Mrs. Wilkerson has done so much for our community. It was great that the Woman’s Club honored such a deserving woman today,” said Chief Mark Weeks. Chief Weeks escorted Ms. Wilkerson to the unveiling of a monument in her honor around Lake DeFuniak where she was honored Friday morning.
