It’s not every day that Officers are called to swimmers in Lake DeFuniak, but this morning was a real exception to the norm. Officers responded to a report of a vehicle being submerged in Lake DeFuniak from the vehicle’s owner, 29 year old Sean Carter of DeFuniak Springs. Carter stated that he had apparently fallen asleep when his 2006 black Toyota Truck rolled into the lake. He was awakened to water rushing in around his feet and legs. Carter managed to get out of the vehicle before it fully submerged into a depth of about 10 feet of water. He reported that he was thankfully not injured, just upset that his vehicle was water damaged. The DeFuniak Springs Fire Department, Walton Fire Rescue, and Walton County Sheriff’s Office, along with their Dive Team all responded to assist in removing the vehicle from the lake. “The main concern was the safety of any occupants of the vehicle” said Chief Mark Weeks. Once the only occupant was o.k., the next concern was the environmental threat that the vehicle may have caused. Oil, gas, and other fluids don’t mix with fresh water. Fortunately, the many agencies involved determined that the vehicle will not pose any long term problems for the environment.
