DeFuniak Springs Police and DeFuniak Springs Fire responded to U.S. Highway 90 West and 20th Street around 9 a.m. this morning in reference to a vehicle crash. Callers reported the vehicle had rolled over as a result of the crash. First responders arrived to find a white 2000 Mitsubishi SUV lying on the driver’s side in the westbound outside lane of U.S. Highway 90 West. A white 2005 Ford sedan was nearby on the shoulder of N. 20th Street. Emergency workers were able to render aid to the two drivers until Paramedics could arrive. According to 18 year old Skylar Owens of DeFuniak Springs, he had just left the parking lot of the Dollar General in the Ford sedan and was heading north on N. 20th Street when he drove into the path of the SUV. The driver of the SUV, 57 year old Gus Parmer of Marianna, stated he was traveling west on U.S. Highway 90 in the outside lane when Owens pulled in front of him. Parmer was unable to stop before his SUV collided with the sedan. The force of the crash sent the SUV up in the air, landing on its side. Both drivers, and the only occupants, were transported to Healthmark Regional Medical Center as a precaution. They were discharged after being cleared by medical personnel. Owens was found to be at fault in the crash and was issued a traffic citation for Failure to Yield Right Away. Owens was also given a Notice to Appear for Driving without a Driver’s License. According to Owens, and state records, he had never been issued a license to drive. “This particular intersection is a big concern that is being addressed, said Chief Mark Weeks. “The City in cooperation with the Florida Department of Transportation have slated for a traffic signal to be installed by the end of this year. It can’t come soon enough for the safety of our citizens.”
