[ARCHIVED] FIRST RESPONDERS SHOW STUDENTS DANGERS OF DRIVING IMPAIRED

Mock Crash

DeFuniak Springs Police and Fire, along with other first responders participated in “How are you getting home?”, a mock crash scenario that could happen if you are in a vehicle with a driver who is impaired.  Students from Walton and Paxton High Schools were the audience for the scenario where a vehicle crashed and the occupants were severely injured.  “It is definitely an eye opener for teens thinking about drinking and driving,” said Chief James Hurley.  “Our goal is to make our kids aware so they will hopefully make the choice not to get in a vehicle with an impaired driver.  We hope our teens will make the choice not to drink, but if they do, the message is don’t drive or get in the vehicle with someone else who has.”  The mock exercise showed first responders dealing with the aftermath of a collision and treating the injured.   “It’s one thing to discuss it, but showing a real wrecked vehicle with smoke and emergency workers is more convincing.”  Should a teen be faced with finding a sober driver, they should call their family member or trusted friend.
