[ARCHIVED] CONVICTED FELON CAPTURED BY POLICE AFTER PURCHASE OF FIREARM

The DeFuniak Springs Police would like to announce the conviction and sentencing of Alan Fraiser Cox in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Florida. Cox was the suspect in a local firearms investigation that involved the DeFuniak Springs Police, Department of Corrections – Probation and Parole, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the United States Attorney’s Office – Northern District of Florida (Pensacola).
On April 8th 2010, an informant provided information to the State Department of Corrections regarding Cox and his possible purchase of a firearm. This information was immediately passed to investigators with the DeFuniak Springs Police, Criminal Investigations Division. The information provided to law enforcement, lead to a criminal investigation involving Alan Fraiser Cox and once Cox was located in DeFuniak Springs during a traffic stop on Highway 90 West, he was found to be in possession of a Browning .270 rifle and a loaded magazine, with both live and spent rounds.
Cox, a convicted felon on previous weapons charges, had just been released from a Florida State Correctional Institution earlier that morning and was on the way to a local State Probation Office for reporting. Investigation determined that the weapon and ammo had just been purchased upon his (Cox’s) release from Prison that same morning.
Cox was arrested on- scene by the DeFuniak Springs Police and Department of Corrections. At the time of his arrest, Cox had already been convicted by the State of Florida for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs (3rd Violation in 10 years, Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Culpable Negligence (Firearm within access of a Minor Resulting in Death).

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives partnered with the DeFuniak Springs Police and on July 21st 2010, Alan Fraiser Cox was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury. On November 9th 2010, Cox was sentenced to 57 months, supervised release of 3 years and various fines.
“Due to the strong partnerships that exist between the DeFuniak Springs Police, Department of Corrections – Probation / Parole, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Attorney’s Office – Northern District of Florida, a dangerous felon and his firearm were removed from the streets” said Chief Mark A. Weeks.
