[ARCHIVED] DEFUNIAK SPRINGS POLICE REMIND YOU TO “CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG”

Whether it’s a mailbox, an advertising sign, or a new sprinkler system, call 811 before you dig! This free call will allow utility companies the chance to mark their cables or pipes to prevent damage and disruption of service. It only takes a moment to call and a reasonable time for utility workers to respond. Once the lines are marked, digging can begin safely.

The benefits of calling 811 before you dig are easy to see, but the consequences are hefty. Chapter 556 of the Florida State Statutes provides for a $500 fine for anyone found digging on a public right of way without proper notification to 811. Additionally, the person digging could be liable for any damage or disruption to utility services which could range into the thousands of dollars. Digging into an underground power or gas line could also pose deadly consequences to anyone in the area.

Help yourself and your community by calling 811 before you dig.
