[ARCHIVED] City Worker Injured by Truck

Officers with the DeFuniak Springs Police responded to a traffic crash involving a City of DeFuniak Springs Garbage Truck that occurred at approximately 8 AM Thursday morning, January 6th, 2011. A utility truck and trailer belonging to Chelco Services, Inc. and was being driven by 21 year old Austin Buck Arnold of DeFuniak Springs. The truck and trailer was traveling East in the outside lane of U.S. Highway 90 West. Arnold stated that the sun was in his eyes and he failed to see the Garbage Truck that was stopped in the same lane. When Arnold noticed the Garbage Truck, he reportedly swerved into the inside lane in attempts to avoid it. The utility materials being hauled on the trailer struck the rear of the Garbage Truck, causing damage to the hydraulics. A City Worker, 33 year old Jody Wilson Wilkerson was attempting to get out of the path of the truck, but was struck by the utility materials. Wilkerson sustained injuries to his hands and extremities, but was conscious. He was transported by Walton County Fire Rescue and later taken by Air Heart to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. At the time of this press release, Wilkerson was listed in stable condition and is still in the Emergency Room. Arnold was not believed to be impaired at the time of the collision, but was charged with Careless Driving and issued a traffic citation. The investigation is continuing.
