DeFuniak Springs Police along with DeFuniak Springs Fire responded to Bruce Avenue near South 2nd Street in reference to a traffic crash involving a Walton County School District school bus and a SUV on Friday, March 13th, 2015 at approximately 3:30 PM. Witnesses reported the school bus was slowing to drop off a student when a SUV, driven by 36 year old Thomas Schofield of DeFuniak Springs, failed to stop before striking the rear bumper of the bus. The bus driver had initiated her lights to stop, but was slowly rolling forward when the collision occurred. The school bus was transporting approximately 20 students at the time of the crash. An 18 year old student riding the bus was taken to the hospital with a possible head injury. No other injuries were reported. The bus received a damaged bumper. The late model Ford Bronco SUV received extensive front end damage and required towing. Schofield was cited for following too closely. School personnel, including the Principal and Assistant Principal from Walton High School, responded to check on the well of the students. A relief bus was brought to the scene to transport students to their homes. Chief Mark Weeks remarked that the wet weather played a key role in this crash. “Fortunately the bus is built like a tank and can handle an impact, while keeping our kids safe. My hopes are that the one injured student makes a speedy recovery.”
